"The IADMD/DrDental 4-day Mini Residency in Dental Sleep Medicine provided me, as a private practicing General Dentist of 20 years, strong multidisciplinary skills in the treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing. The didactic portion explains The Who, When and How of dental sleep apnea treatment.Their hands-on instruction provided me confidence in fabricating and manipulating oral appliances. I feel comfortable using the knowledge i have gained to diagnose and treat Sleep Apnea. I am grateful that this Mini-Residency has given me credits acceptable for me to submit for AADSM Qualified Dentist status while I work my way to becoming an ABDSM Diplomate."

- Dr. Jim D., DMD

"As a fairly new dentist, this mini residency will help shape my career. Now I can also contribute to the sleep medicine community, and help people who are not compliant with their medically prescribed CPAP. I think this type of robust course will be useful to build a network of next-generation Dentists with Sleep Pts and will have added benefit of dentists working close with physicians that never before."

- Dr. John B., DMD

"The role of the sleep-disorders dentist in the management of sleep-disordered breathing is expanding and most physcians are looking for a properly trained dentist to work with. These physicians are going to choose an AADSM Qualified Dentist over a dentist that is not as is stated in the jdsm.org, that at minimum, dentists involved with SDB should be AADSM Quualified. This residency is robust and I feel confident I can integrate this into my practice."

- Dr. Sonya M., DDS

Course Objectives

This Mini-Residency will allow dentists the opportunity to add Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) and the treatment options of Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) within their dental practices.

Since dentists are typically seeing patients more often, it is important to understand sleep apnea, headaches, TMD and craniofacial pain, as well as gaining an understanding of the right questions to ask for treatment planning.

Dentists will learn how to properly screen for sleep apnea and gain the knowledge and clinical skills required to assess and treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) seen in a dental practice that may impact the management of a patient with Sleep Disordered Breathing. We will prepare each dentist to evaluate patients, deliver and adjust, in their dental offices, customized OAT for OSA, Sleep Disordered Breathing and snoring. Dentists will be guided in state-of-the-art patient examination techniques, impression and record taking, fitting and adjusting oral appliances that are marketed for OSA, Sleep Disordered Breathing and more.

Objectives further include the following:

  •  Basic physiology of normal and abnormal sleep of OSA and other sleep disorders.

  •  Different types of oral appliances used to treat OSA or snoring, and their modes of action.

  •  Impression and Materials used for OAT and how to take the required bite records.

  •  Polysomnogram (PSG), Home Study Test (HST) and assess patients before and during OAT; with time permitting, an HST for each student.

  •  Examination of the TMJ and masticatory muscles in the evaluation and treatment of patients with OAT.

  •  Differences in treatment for adult OSA and pediatric OSA.

  •  Long-term follow-up care of patients with OAT.

  •  Adjunct therapy for pain management.
  •   Practice management, medical coding and billing for OSA, OAT.
  •   And much more!

Please note - Cutoff deadline is soon for our May Mini Residency.
